Brandon
Roman
Brandon has set out to change the world, one day at a time.
I was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. My love for service developed at an early age when I would participate in service projects with my Church's youth group. There has always been something about service that just makes me happy.
In high school, I was student body President and used this as an opportunity to really begin giving back to the community. I organized events with our local food bank, Toys for Tots and the American Red Cross. I was even given special recognition at graduation for my service to our school and local community.
One organization that I have worked with extensively over the years is the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I can't even begin to express how much joy I have felt from seeing terminally ill children's wishes come true. It's very disheartening to see these innocent children suffering, but at the same time, it's also so rewarding to meet and learn from these special children.
I also had the opportunity to serve a mission for the Mormon Church in Los Angeles, California. I worked with many Hispanic people and, in addition to my work as a missionary at the time, served the impoverished people and acted as an advocate for those in need. This was a humbling experience for me. I saw people who had almost nothing, but yet were so happy and taught me how to always maintain a positive outlook on life.
Now, as a proud, gay, adult male, my focus is on serving and giving back to the LGBT community through my volunteer work with GLAAD. I recently moved from Utah back to the East Coast to attend law school in Washington, D.C. Shortly after the move, I was blessed to be able to marry my husband, Seth, here in D.C. After enrolling in school, I seized the opportunity to get involved with the local LGBT community in hopes of helping others understand that "it gets better." I have also begun to focus on LGBT rights in school and plan to give back even further by serving as a legal advocate for gay and lesbian people throughout the country and around the world.
